What is RAM ?
The full form of RAM is Random Access Memory . This memory is also called as Direct Access Memory . This memory is present in less size in computer as that of secondary memory e.g. 1GB , 2GB , 4GB , 6GB or may be more then that .
What is the function of RAM ?
Whenever you use any application or play games in computer then your mobile needs some space and all those space comes from this RAM .
E.g. suppose you want to play volleyball then surely you will go to the volleyball court either indoor or outdoor or may be in the street but surely you will not go to the bathroom to olay volleyball . So same like this when you work on your mobile whole day then all this works are done in this memory i.e. RAM , That is why it is said that the more RAM will be in your mobile phone the more application you can use at a time .
Suppose if u want to watch a movie or to listen to music CPU takes that from the memory and play that movie or song in CPU . The more application you run the more your RAM will be used and you mobile will become slow or may be hang
Note :- This memory is also called as volatile memory . Lets understand this with an example , e.g. if you are using some 4 or 5 applications in your fone and suddenly may be your phone discharges or you switch it off or may be for some technical reason it stops to function then when you will turn your mobile phone on all those applications will be closed . That is why it is called as volatile memory .
The word VOLATILE is mean which can change rapidly and unpredictably , specially for the worse .
Why RAM is called as RANDOM ACCESS MEMORY ?
RAM stores data and information in cells . Cells are made up of different rows and colums , which has their unique address which is called as cell path . CPU can access data and information from this cell path without amy sequence i.e. randomly . Because of this unique feature it is called as RAM ( Random Access Memory ) .
Characteristics of RAM :-
1. RAM is a volatile memory .
2. Capacity of this memory is less than that of secondary memory .
3. It is faster than that of secondary memory .
4. All program , application and information works in this memory .
5. This is also called as working memory of Computer .
Types of RAM :-
There are two types of RAM
1. Static RAM
2. Dynamic RAM
1.Static RAM :-
By the word we can understand that this is a stable memory . This is also called as SRAM . This uses 6 chip transistor and no capacitors . To stop the leakage of transistor power ( i.e. electricity ) is not needed .
This is not needed to be refreshed as data is stable in this memory . SRAM needs more chip than that of DRAM to store same size of DATA and thats why making charge of SRAM is more than DRAM , that is why SRAM is used as CACHE MEMORY as cache memory is fastest amongst all the memories .
Charateristics If SRAM :-
1. This memory doesnt needs to be refreshed again and again .
2. It is faster memory .
3. This is used as a CACHE MEMORY .
4. Size of this memory is more .
5. It is expensive memory amongst all .
2. Dynamic Memory :-
This memory can also be called as DRAM . This memory is opposite of SRAM . This memory needs to be refreshed again and again and it is possible only when this memory would be connected with a refresh circuit .
This DRAM is used to make a System Memory . This DRAM is made up of one Capacitor and one Transistor .
Charateristics if DRAM :-
1. This memory needs to be refreshed again and again .
2. This memory is slow .
3. Size of this memory is less .
4. It is cheaper amongst all the memories .
5. It needs less power .
Is there any difference between mobile RAM or RAM of computer ?
The answer is yes . They are different in powers . Mobile RAM is designed to save power where as PC RAM is designed to increase the performance .
